SEN Teacher – Wigan, Greater Manchester

Location: Wigan, Greater Manchester

Pay: £180 – £230 per day

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term time

Contract: Temp to perm

Start date: ASAP

An SEN Teacher is needed to take on the nurture class at a small specialist secondary school in Wigan, Greater Manchester, on a temp-to-perm basis paying £180–£230 per day. The group is made up of pupils aged 11–16 who have found previous schools difficult and need close pastoral support alongside their lessons. You'll plan and deliver adapted teaching for a small class, with support staff alongside you, and set the routines that keep the day settled. Teachers with QTS and ECTs are both welcome to apply.

The Setting

The school is a small specialist secondary for 11 to 16-year-olds in the Wigan area. Low pupil numbers mean staff know each young person and their needs well. Every pupil follows an individualised learning programme, and pastoral support is built into the whole school day.

The Role

  • Leading a nurture class of secondary-aged pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Planning lessons around each pupil's starting point, with a focus on literacy, numeracy and confidence
  • Keeping a consistent daily structure so pupils know what to expect
  • Working alongside teaching assistants and the pastoral team on individual support plans
  • Recording progress against personal targets and feeding back to senior leaders
  • Keeping families and carers updated and involved

What You'll Need

  • QTS – ECTs considered
  • Experience teaching or supporting young people with SEMH needs, in a specialist, alternative provision or mainstream setting
  • Skill in adapting the curriculum for pupils working at a range of levels
  • A calm, consistent approach to behaviour
  • The right to work in the UK

You'll be patient, nurturing and dedicated, and able to build trust with young people who have had a difficult time at school.
