Assistant Payroll Manager

Salary: Up to £45,000 + discretionary bonus

Location: Harrow, London

Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days home

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

The Role

An opportunity for an experienced bureau payroll professional to join an established accountancy practice as the number two to the Payroll Manager.

This is a senior, hands-on processing role with responsibility for a portfolio of approximately 500 client payrolls, predominantly smaller businesses with 1–50 employees.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a large portfolio of weekly, monthly and annual client payrolls.
• Process starters, leavers, SSP, SMP, SPP and other payroll adjustments.
• Manage pensions and auto-enrolment requirements.
• Independently manage client payrolls from onboarding through to ongoing delivery.
• Review and sign off payroll work completed by other team members where required.
• Liaise directly with clients, HMRC, pension providers and other statutory bodies.
• Ensure payrolls meet agreed deadlines, SLAs and compliance requirements.
• Work closely with an offshore payroll team to support wider portfolio delivery.
• Maintain strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation.

Ideal Candidate

• Strong payroll bureau/accountancy practice experience is essential.
• Extensive end-to-end UK payroll processing experience.
• Able to independently manage a large portfolio of client payrolls.
• Strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pensions and statutory payments.
• Experience reviewing or checking other payroll professionals’ work.
• Previous team management experience is not essential.
• BrightPay, Xero and/or Sage experience would be advantageous.
• Suitable for an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist, Payroll Supervisor or Payroll Team Leader looking for their next step.
