Mechanical Project Manager (Turnaround)
Ellesmere Port | 18-month contract | Up to £80 per hour
Are you a mechanically minded Project Manager who knows refinery turnarounds inside out?
Do you enjoy owning big, technical scopes from early concept right through to execution?
Fancy a two-year contract leading some of the most significant work on a major UK refinery's 2028 Turnaround?
What's in it for you?
●Up to £80 per hour
●An 18 month contract with a clear, defined project to deliver
●Ownership of a high-profile Turnaround portfolio with a small team of your own
What will you be doing?
●Leading the 2028 Turnaround project portfolio, with a strong focus on re-life, repair and replacement work on CCU, CO Boiler and associated high-temperature units
●Owning scope, estimate, schedule, procurement, governance and readiness for the Stripper and Pre-Stripper re-life, Third Stage Separator, CO Boiler and Regenerator scopes
●Leading a team of 2-3 mechanical and civil project engineers, and working closely with TA, planning, inspection, operations, maintenance and contractors
●Challenging technical proposals, contractor deliverables, lifting plans and execution methods to make sure they're safe and constructable
●Managing major execution risks, including heavy lifts, large equipment removal, temporary supports and pressure part replacement
●Driving MOC, ORA, HAZOP and design review requirements through site governance
●Preparing decision papers and updates for senior leadership
●Keeping a strong field presence through walkdowns, enabling works and the TA execution window itself
Where you'll be doing it?
You'll be based at Stanlow, a major brownfield refinery and high-hazard COMAH site in the North West. The role sits within the Engineering department, reporting to the Mechanical, Reliability & Civil Manager. It's been created specifically to prepare for and deliver the 2028 Turnaround, so you'll be at the centre of one of the site's most important programmes of work.
What you'll need:
●10+ years' experience in mechanical engineering, project delivery, turnarounds or major maintenance in refining, petrochemical, process, power or other high-hazard environments
●A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related discipline backed by strong mechanical project delivery experience)
●Strong mechanical knowledge of pressure vessels, boilers, heat exchangers, piping and FCCU internals
●Experience leading projects from concept through estimating, procurement, workpacks, execution and close-out
●Experience managing heavy lifts, equipment removals, temporary supports and reinstatement in live plant
●Good working knowledge of ASME, API, EN/BS standards, PSSR and COMAH
●Confidence managing contractors, EPC deliverables, project controls and senior stakeholders
●A full UK driving licence
●Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status and a project management qualification (APM, PMP, PRINCE2) would be a bonus, but practical brownfield delivery experience matters more
