Pay: £180 – £250 per day

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term time only

Contract: Temp to perm

Start date: ASAP

We are recruiting a KS1 SEN Teacher for a recently opened independent special school in Burnley, Lancashire, starting after October half term on a temp to perm basis. You will lead a small Key Stage 1 class of pupils who are non-verbal, have personal care needs and are working at early developmental levels, so learning is delivered through play, sensory activities and structured routines. Experience in EYFS would suit this class well. The role is full-time, Monday to Friday in term time, paid at £180 – £250 per day.

About the School

An independent special school in Burnley that opened its doors in September 2026, teaching pupils aged 5 to 18 with complex learning needs in small classes with a high staff-to-pupil ratio.

The Role

  • Planning and leading play-based lessons pitched at pre-formal and early developmental stages
  • Using symbols, objects of reference, signing and other alternative communication with non-verbal pupils
  • Directing the classroom support staff and sharing each pupil's targets with them
  • Providing and overseeing intimate and personal care with dignity, in line with care plans
  • Recording small-step progress and reporting it to families and the school's leaders
  • Supervising pupils at break, lunch and on off-site visits

What You'll Need

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience teaching EYFS or KS1, ideally with pupils who have SEN
  • Confidence teaching non-verbal pupils and using a play-based curriculum
  • Willingness to carry out personal care as part of the role

You will be a patient, nurturing teacher who notices the small signs of progress and builds calm, predictable days for young children.
