Location: Across Derby city

Rate: £34 per hour

Contract: Flexible, self-employed, term-time work

Requirement: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) essential

About the Role

We're looking for qualified teachers with SEN experience to deliver 1:1 tuition to children and young people across Derby who are currently out of mainstream education or need specialist support to re-engage with their learning.

Placements are based across Derby city, including areas such as Normanton, Alvaston, Chaddesden, Sinfin, Littleover and Mickleover, supporting learners with a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Many of the young people have had disrupted education, so you'll combine structured, curriculum-based teaching with a patient, relationship-led approach to rebuild their confidence and help them make measurable progress.

This role is open to QTS holders only. It's a great fit for teachers who want to step away from full-time classroom teaching and focus on making a real difference for individual learners, with flexibility over when and how much they work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver tailored 1:1 lessons for children and young people with SEN, in line with their EHCP or individual learning plan.
  • Teach core subjects, including English and maths, and support Functional Skills or GCSE preparation where appropriate.
  • Assess starting points, set clear targets and track progress over time.
  • Support engagement, confidence, emotional regulation and personal development.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners who may have struggled in education.
  • Provide written session reports and share progress with the referring team.
  • Work flexibly across home, school and community settings, depending on the placement.

Requirements

  • Essential: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Experience teaching or supporting children and young people with SEN, ideally on a 1:1 or small group basis.
  • Confidence working with learners with autism, ADHD, SEMH needs, anxiety or challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to adapt planning and teaching to individual needs and abilities.
  • A patient, calm and adaptable approach with strong communication skills.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Own transport is beneficial for travelling between placements across Derby.

Working Hours and Pay

  • £34 per hour.
  • Flexible, term-time work, generally Monday to Friday during school hours.
  • Sessions take place in the learner's home, school or a suitable community setting.
  • Work available across Derby city.
  • Self-employed, ideal if you want flexible hours or to add sessions around existing teaching work.

Who Would Suit This Role?

Qualified teachers, SEN teachers, SENCOs and supply teachers who hold QTS and have experience supporting learners with additional needs, particularly those looking for flexible work outside the full-time classroom.

If you hold QTS, have SEN experience and want flexible, rewarding work supporting young people in Derby, we'd love to hear from you!
