The Opportunity

We are working exclusively with an established and growing business within the structural engineering and construction sector, who are looking to appoint an experienced Business Development Manager to drive continued growth and develop long-term relationships with key clients.

This is a senior commercial role with responsibility for identifying new opportunities, securing high-value projects, developing strategic client relationships and helping shape the company's future growth strategy.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in business development, sales or commercial management within engineering, construction or consulting, with a proven track record of winning significant projects and developing high-value client relationships.

The Role

As Business Development Manager, you will take ownership of the business development function, identifying new markets and opportunities while strengthening relationships with existing and prospective clients.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Developing and implementing business development and growth strategies.
• Identifying new markets, sectors and revenue opportunities.
• Developing relationships with key decision-makers and strategic clients.
• Winning new business and securing high-value structural engineering projects.
• Building partnerships with developers, architects, main contractors, consultants and other key stakeholders.
• Identifying upcoming projects through market research, networking and industry contacts.
• Monitoring construction, infrastructure and industrial market trends.
• Managing and developing a strong sales pipeline and accurate revenue forecasts.
• Leading the identification and qualification of tender opportunities.
• Assessing bid/no-bid opportunities based on commercial viability.
• Coordinating with technical and engineering teams to develop compelling proposals.
• Supporting contract negotiations and commercial discussions.
• Managing and developing key strategic accounts to maximise repeat business.
• Representing the business at industry events, conferences and networking opportunities.
• Working closely with engineering and project delivery teams to ensure a smooth transition from business development through to project delivery.
• Monitoring KPIs including pipeline value, win rates, new business, revenue growth and client retention.
• Leading, mentoring and developing members of the business development/sales team.

About You

We are looking for a commercially driven Business Development professional who understands how to identify opportunities, build relationships and convert them into substantial projects.

You will ideally have:

• 5–10 years' experience in business development, sales or commercial management.
• Experience within structural engineering, construction, engineering consultancy or a related technical environment.
• A proven track record of winning high-value projects.
• Strong experience developing relationships with senior decision-makers.
• Experience working with developers, contractors, architects, consultants or similar stakeholders.
• An understanding of tendering, procurement and contract processes.
• Strong commercial awareness and negotiation skills.
• Excellent presentation, influencing and relationship-building abilities.
• Experience managing a sales pipeline and using CRM systems.
• Previous experience leading, mentoring or managing a sales/business development team would be highly advantageous.

A degree in Business, Marketing, Civil/Structural Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline would be beneficial, although relevant commercial experience will also be considered.
