Location: Gloucester

Salary: Up to £45,500 per annum, dependent on experience

Hours: Rotating Shifts – 6:00am–2:00pm / 2:00pm–10:00pm

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Are you an electrically biased Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer looking for your next challenge within the food manufacturing industry?

GMP Recruitment are proud to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established and successful food manufacturing business seeking an experienced and proactive Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer with a 70% electrical and 30% mechanical skill set to join their busy engineering team in Gloucester.

This is an excellent opportunity for an electrically biased engineer who also has strong hands-on mechanical maintenance experience and enjoys working within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring production machinery operates safely and efficiently, carrying out electrical fault finding, reactive breakdown maintenance, planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and mechanical repairs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out electrical and mechanical maintenance across a range of food production, processing and packaging machinery.
  • Take the lead on electrical fault finding, diagnostics and repairs, ensuring minimal disruption to production.
  • Diagnose faults on PLC-controlled machinery, electrical control panels, sensors, inverters, motors and three-phase electrical systems.
  • Undertake mechanical maintenance and repairs on conveyors, gearboxes, bearings, pumps, drives and production equipment.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules and respond promptly to reactive breakdowns.
  • Fault find and maintain automated production lines and associated electrical control systems.
  • Support machinery installations, modifications, commissioning and improvement projects.
  • Carry out mechanical component replacements, adjustments and equipment overhauls when required.
  • Work closely with production teams to identify recurring faults and improve machinery performance.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, maintenance reports and PPM documentation.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with health and safety, food hygiene and manufacturing standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing downtime and improving equipment reliability.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven experience as an Electrically Biased Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer within a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Strong electrical engineering experience (approximately 70%) combined with practical mechanical maintenance skills (approximately 30%).
  • Previous experience within food manufacturing, FMCG or a similar fast-paced production environment is highly desirable.
  • Confident fault finding on PLC-controlled equipment, electrical control systems, sensors, inverters and three-phase machinery.
  • Good understanding of electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, motors, relays, contactors and control circuits.
  • Practical mechanical experience working with conveyors, gearboxes, bearings, pumps, pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Experience completing both reactive breakdown maintenance and planned preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical faults independently while also undertaking routine mechanical repairs and maintenance.
  • Relevant electrical engineering qualification, ideally NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC or equivalent.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure within a busy production environment.

What We're Looking For

We are particularly interested in speaking with engineers who have a strong electrical maintenance background but are genuinely multi-skilled.

The ideal candidate will have approximately 70% electrical and 30% mechanical experience, with the confidence to take ownership of electrical breakdowns while also being capable of carrying out mechanical maintenance and repairs.

You should be comfortable working on automated production machinery, diagnosing faults, replacing components and supporting the wider engineering team to keep production running smoothly.

This opportunity would suit an Electrical Maintenance Engineer who has developed strong mechanical skills throughout their career and is looking for a varied, hands-on engineering position.

Why Apply?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established food manufacturing business offering:

  • Competitive salary of up to £45,500 per annum, dependent on experience.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • Rotating early and afternoon shifts.
