Underwriter (RDT579)

Greater Manchester

Specialist insurer in the UK market, writing a varied book of niche and specialty lines looking for an experienced Underwriter. This is a broad, hands-on scheme underwriting role with real variety. It is an environment with genuine breadth and autonomy: people here see the whole picture, their decisions carry weight, and the company are investing their own underwriting, pricing and technical capability - so there is real scope to build and own things.

Role Purpose

The Underwriter underwrite schemes within delegated authority, and takes an active role in keeping them performing - monitoring the book, building relationships with schemes and coverholders, and working with the pricing and product teams on pricing and product design. Working under the Underwriting Manager, the role combines scheme underwriting with performance monitoring and cross-functional support. It suits someone with solid insurance experience who wants breadth across underwriting, pricing and product rather than a narrow, case-by-case underwriting role.

Key Accountabilities

  • Scheme underwriting – underwrite and assess schemes within guidelines, applying sound judgement and handling referrals within your remit, with binding decisions referred for approval.
  • Performance monitoring – actively monitor the performance of schemes and the wider book, identifying issues early and flagging or acting on them.
  • Product support – support the product team on product design, bringing an underwriting view to how schemes and products are built.
  • Pricing support – support the pricing team with the underwriting insight and scheme knowledge that informs pricing.
  • Client and scheme relationships – build and maintain relationships with schemes and coverholders, acting as a helpful and responsive point of contact.
  • Delegated authority support – support the delegated authority process behind the schemes, without owning bordereaux, audit or the monitoring machinery.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  • Insurance experience, with a sound understanding of underwriting.
  • Experience of, or genuine aptitude for, scheme, delegated authority or coverholder business.
  • The ability to monitor performance.
  • Comfortable working across functions - with pricing and product, not just underwriting.
  • Good relationship and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and strong Excel skills.

Desirable

  • Experience underwriting schemes, binders or delegated authority business specifically.
  • Exposure to product design or pricing.
  • Knowledge of the GFSC regime or comparable UK (FCA/PRA) experience.
  • Cert CII or working towards it.
