The Opportunity

I am recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join a growing specialist Traffic Management business supporting infrastructure, utilities and civil engineering projects across the UK.

This is a newly created position and an opportunity to take dedicated responsibility for Health & Safety across a growing traffic management operation. Reporting directly into the Group SHEQ Director, you will provide H&S leadership across multiple depots and operational sites, working closely with senior management, supervisors and frontline teams. The position offers a mixture of remote working, depot-based support and operational site visits, so regular travel will form an important part of the role.

The Role

This is very much an operational Health & Safety position.You will provide visible H&S leadership across traffic management and highways activities, ensuring operations are delivered safely and in line with company standards, industry requirements and client expectations.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

• Leading Health & Safety across traffic management and highways operations
• Providing visible H&S leadership across depots and operational sites
• Working closely with operational management, supervisors and frontline employees
• Monitoring compliance with company policies, procedures and management systems
• Ensuring operations remain compliant with relevant traffic management and highways legislation and industry standards
• Providing specialist H&S advice and guidance to operational teams
• Driving consistency in H&S standards across multiple locations
• Supporting continual improvement across the Traffic Management operation
• Challenging unsafe working practices and positively influencing operational behaviours
• Supporting management teams with emerging risks and compliance requirements
• Promoting a strong, practical and positive safety culture across the business
• Providing assurance to the Group SHEQ Director around operational H&S performance and compliance

What I'm Looking For

For this position, I am particularly interested in speaking with Health & Safety professionals who have worked in Traffic Management, Highways or closely related infrastructure environments.

This isn't a generic H&S Manager role. The successful candidate needs to understand the risks associated with operational traffic management and be credible working directly with the people delivering the work.

Ideally, your background will include:

• Health & Safety management within Traffic Management, Highways or a closely related environment
• Strong operational and site-based H&S experience
• Experience supporting geographically dispersed operations or multiple depots
• A good understanding of the specific risks associated with traffic management and highways works
• Experience working alongside operational managers, supervisors and frontline teams
• Strong knowledge of relevant H&S legislation and industry requirements
• Experience monitoring and improving operational compliance
• Confidence challenging unsafe practices and influencing behavioural change
• The ability to communicate effectively from frontline operative through to senior management level
• A practical, solutions-focused approach to Health & Safety
• Willingness to travel regularly between depots and operational sites

The Person

I am looking for someone who can be highly visible within the operation rather than managing Health & Safety purely from behind a desk.You'll need to be comfortable getting out onto sites, engaging with Traffic Management teams and understanding how work is actually being delivered.

The right person will be able to balance compliance with pragmatism, build strong relationships with operational teams and drive improvement without creating unnecessary barriers to getting the job done safely.
