Senior Waste Engineer – Nuclear
Location: Warrington / West Cumbria
Type: Permanent
Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Waste Engineer to support a leading nuclear engineering organisation delivering complex decommissioning and radioactive waste management programmes.
The role will provide authoritative advice across radioactive waste management and characterisation, supporting decommissioning projects from strategy and planning through to technical delivery. You will prepare and review waste and characterisation documentation, support bids, lead BAT and optioneering studies, provide technical input to customers and act as a key interface across project teams and the wider waste supply chain.
You will be expected to have a strong working knowledge of the UK nuclear waste regulatory framework, including radioactive waste management routes, testing facilities, Waste Acceptance Criteria and the NWS waste management framework. Experience of characterisation methodologies, including Data Quality Objectives and Data Quality Assessment processes, is also important.
The successful candidate should have strong experience in radioactive waste management and characterisation within the nuclear sector, ideally with decommissioning exposure. You should be comfortable producing or reviewing waste management plans, characterisation plans, waste inventories and associated technical documentation, and be capable of leading small teams and mentoring junior staff.
Essential requirements include a degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience, a Certificate of Competence to act as a Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA), Transport of Class 7 by Road Level 2 or 3, and Chartered status.
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial: RPA duties, land quality, GDF package compliance and Letters of Compliance, dose assessment, environmental risk assessment, safety case support, decommissioning strategy development, waste strategy development and dangerous goods advice.
Due to the nature of the work, applicants will need to meet the relevant residency requirements to obtain a minimum level of UK security clearance if not already cleared.
