Hays are delighted to be partnering with a growing international contractor to recruit a Buyer for their commercial team in Newtownabbey. The organisation delivers electrical, mechanical and civil projects across the UK, Europe and further afield, offering an excellent opportunity to develop within a fast-paced and expanding business.

Your new role
Reporting to the Commercial Director, you will support projects from the initial tender and estimating stages through to procurement. You will complete quantity take-offs, prepare bills of quantities and pricing schedules, and obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.

You will assist with tender submissions, commercial clarifications and subcontract procurement, alongside purchasing electrical materials and equipment and supporting buying requirements across mechanical and civil projects. You will liaise closely with suppliers, subcontractors and internal project teams to ensure materials and services meet specification, budget and programme requirements.

The role will also involve maintaining accurate procurement records, negotiating and reviewing commercial options, and identifying opportunities to achieve cost savings and alternative supply solutions.

What you'll need to succeed

• A minimum of 2 years' relevant experience within estimating, buying, procurement or a similar construction/commercial role
• Experience completing quantity take-offs and preparing bills of quantities
• Confidence reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications
• Experience sourcing, reviewing and comparing supplier or subcontractor quotations
• Strong numerical ability and excellent attention to detail
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Strong organisational and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• An electrical, technical or wider construction background would be advantageous
• Previous exposure to electrical estimating or procurement would be beneficial
• Experience with subcontract procurement, commercial negotiations or digital take-off software would be advantageous
• A relevant qualification in electrical engineering, quantity surveying, construction or procurement would be desirable
