Your new company
Hays HR is exclusively recruiting for a manufacturing organisation in the North East who is looking to appoint an experienced HR Manager to lead the people agenda across a busy operational site, located in Middlesbrough. This role is based on-site.

This is a varied, hands-on role combining employee relations, organisational change, trade union engagement, training and compliance, talent development and HR operations. Working closely with the General Manager and senior leadership team, you will provide practical and commercially focused HR support while helping shape the wider people agenda for the site.

It would suit someone who enjoys being close to the operation and is equally comfortable advising senior leaders, managing complex ER matters and rolling their sleeves up with day-to-day HR activity.

Your new role

We are looking for an experienced HR professional who is confident operating within a fast-paced, operational environment.

  • Act as a trusted HR partner to the site leadership team, providing advice and guidance across a broad range of people matters.
  • Lead and support organisational change programmes, including restructuring and workforce transitions.
  • Manage complex employee relations matters including disciplinary, grievance, capability and long-term absence cases.
  • Support the relationship with recognised trade unions, including consultation, annual pay negotiations and collective bargaining.
  • Ensure HR policies and procedures remain compliant with UK employment legislation and relevant industry requirements.
  • Take ownership of site training and competence management, ensuring mandatory and operational training remains compliant and up to date.
  • Manage and develop the site's training and compliance systems.
  • Lead the annual performance review process and support succession and talent planning.
  • Support managers with employee development and competency planning.
  • Oversee the monthly payroll process, ensuring information is accurate, complete and appropriately authorised.
  • Own and develop employee wellbeing and recognition initiatives.
  • Manage the HR and training budget and support cost-effective recruitment and development activities.
  • Provide guidance and development to the wider HR team and managers across the site.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Previous HR experience within manufacturing, engineering, industrial or another operational environment.
  • A CIPD qualification or equivalent relevant HR experience.
  • Strong employee relations knowledge with confidence in handling complex cases.
  • Experience supporting organisational change, restructuring and consultation.
  • Previous exposure to trade union relationships and collective consultation would be highly advantageous.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK employment legislation.
  • Experience of performance management, talent development and succession planning.
  • An understanding of training, competence or compliance management within an operational workforce.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build credibility from shop floor through to senior leadership level.
  • A pragmatic and hands-on approach with strong organisational skills.
  • Payroll systems experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
