Procurement Category Buyer

The Opportunity

Butler Rose Procurement & Supply Chain is delighted to be exclusively partnering with a well-established and growing Cumbrian engineering and manufacturing business to recruit a Procurement Category Buyer.

With a proud heritage in the Cumbrian landscape and an exciting future ahead, this is an opportunity to join an established SME where people, relationships and individual contribution really matter. Offering the opportunity to be part of a growing business without the scale and complexity of a large corporate environment, this is a role where you can genuinely make a difference.

Working closely with the Procurement Lead, you will take ownership of a portfolio of suppliers and commodity groups, developing sourcing strategies and driving improvements across cost, quality, delivery and supply chain resilience.

Location: Ulverston
Working Pattern: Compressed hours or a traditional five-day week
Hybrid Working: One day per week from home.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement category strategies aligned with business objectives and operational requirements.

  • Manage supplier relationships, ensuring strong performance across quality, cost and delivery.

  • Identify and deliver cost-saving opportunities through negotiation, value engineering and strategic sourcing.

  • Lead supplier negotiations, securing competitive pricing and favourable commercial agreements.

  • Evaluate supplier capability, performance and market conditions to support sourcing decisions.

  • Monitor supplier KPIs, addressing performance issues and driving continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deliver sourcing projects and support production requirements.

  • Identify and mitigate supply chain risks, ensuring continuity of supply.

  • Maintain compliance with contractual obligations, company policies and relevant regulatory requirements.

About You
  • Previous experience in a Buyer or Procurement role, ideally within a technical manufacturing environment.

  • Experience using ERP systems, with a good understanding of MRP processes.

  • Knowledge of procurement within the technical manufacturing sector or a similar environment.

  • Strong commercial, analytical and negotiation skills.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and supplier relationship skills.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and meet deadlines.

  • CIPS qualification or working towards professional accreditation would be advantageous.

What's on Offer?
  • Company performance-related bonus.

  • 5 weeks' annual leave, plus bank holidays.

  • Choice of compressed working hours or a traditional five-day week.

  • One day per week working from home, with potential for additional flexibility.

  • Opportunity to contribute to a growing technical manufacturing business.

Interested?

If you're an experienced Buyer looking for your next opportunity within the technical manufacturing sector, we'd love to hear from you. This is a business with exciting growth plans in place and an established collaborative team to be part of.
