Role Purpose

The CNC Engineer (Setter/Programmer) will program, set up and operate CNC milling and turning machines to produce high-quality precision components. You will take work from drawing or model through to first-off approval and stable production, and you will help train and support operators on the shop floor.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models and process sheets, including GD&T and tolerances.
  • Write, edit and optimise CNC programs using CAM software
  • Select and specify cutting tools, work-holding, fixtures and speeds and feeds for each job.
  • Set up CNC machines, load tooling, set work and tool offsets, and prove out programs safely.
  • Produce and inspect first-off parts, make adjustments, and sign off for production.
  • Monitor machine performance, tool wear and part quality during runs, making corrections as needed.
  • Use inspection equipment (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, CMM where applicable) and record results.
  • Troubleshoot programming, tooling and machining problems and carry out routine machine maintenance.
  • Continuously improve cycle times, tool life and set-up times to reduce cost and scrap.
  • Support, guide and train CNC operators and apprentices.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe work area and follow all health and safety procedures.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Recognised apprenticeship, NVQ/City & Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) in Engineering or Machining.
  • Further CNC programming or CAM training is an advantage.
  • Proven experience as a CNC setter and programmer in a precision engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Fanuc, Siemens, Dahlih, Kitamura, Haas or Mazak controls
  • Proficiency with CAM software such as Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidWorks CAM, Esprit or similar.
  • Able to read and interpret technical drawings and apply GD&T.
  • Solid understanding of machining processes, materials, tooling and work-holding.
