Costs Negotiator – Legal Costs Location: Bolton, Birmingham or Liverpool
Hours: 28–35 Hours per Week | Monday–Friday
Salary: Competitive, Dependent on Experience

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Costs Negotiator to join the specialist Legal Costs department of a well-established and highly regarded national law firm.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a legal costs professional with experience in Claimant or Defendant Costs Negotiation to manage their own caseload, negotiate settlements and work on a varied range of complex litigation matters.

Working within a specialist team handling Legacy, Abuse, Military and Corporate Risks claims, you will be responsible for progressing costs matters from initial review through to settlement.

The Role

• Managing your own caseload of legal costs matters from instruction through to settlement.
• Reviewing cases and developing effective costs negotiation strategies.
• Preparing Points of Dispute and reviewing Points of Reply.
• Negotiating costs settlements with opposing parties, primarily by telephone.
• Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of costs claims and advising clients accordingly.
• Providing clear, commercially focused advice to clients and insurers.
• Handling matters involving Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence, Professional Negligence and other complex litigation claims.
• Instructing Counsel and attending Detailed Assessment Hearings, conferences and mediations where required.
• Conducting advocacy at relevant hearings where appropriate.
• Ensuring compliance with client SLAs, KPIs and SRA regulations.

About You

• Minimum 12 months' experience working as a Costs Negotiator, handling your own caseload.
• Experience in either Claimant or Defendant Legal Costs.
• Strong knowledge of the Detailed Assessment process, including drafting Points of Dispute and considering replies.
• Excellent telephone negotiation and communication skills.
• Understanding of current costs case law and litigation procedures.
• Experience advising clients and managing expectations.
• A relevant degree, LPC and/or ALCD qualification.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
• A proactive, commercially minded approach to achieving settlements.
