Mechanical Engineer - Propulsion Systems
Contract | 6 months initially | Outside IR35
Location: Wiltshire initially, relocating to northeast Swindon in mid-January
Working pattern: Typically 4 days on-site per week
Start date: ASAP, ideally early November 2026
About the Opportunity
An opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of a 350 N microjet turbine engine for uncrewed aerial systems (UAS/UAVs).
Working within a small, fast-paced engineering team, you will support the mechanical design and CAD work required to develop a compact propulsion system, working closely with senior engineers and the CTO.
This is a hands-on contract for an engineer who enjoys solving practical design challenges and helping turn engineering concepts into physical hardware.
The Role
You will support the mechanical design and development of a microjet turbine engine, contributing to CAD models, engineering drawings and the development of prototype components.
Responsibilities are expected to include:
Producing and developing 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
Supporting mechanical design activities for the engine and associated propulsion systems.
Developing component designs and assemblies to meet engineering requirements.
Supporting design iterations and resolving mechanical engineering challenges.
Working with senior propulsion engineers to translate concepts into manufacturable hardware.
Supporting prototype development and incorporating design feedback.
Collaborating with the wider engineering team on component integration and design improvements.
Considering manufacturing methods, component interfaces and practical assembly requirements.
Essential Experience
A relevant Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent engineering background.
Strong mechanical design and 3D CAD capability, ideally using SolidWorks.
Experience producing engineering models, drawings and assemblies.
Practical understanding of mechanical engineering and component design.
Ability to work independently, solve problems and contribute within a small engineering team.
Availability for an early November start and the required on-site working pattern.
Why Consider This Contract?
Work on the mechanical design of a developing microjet propulsion system.
Work closely with senior engineering leadership in a small team.
Contribute directly to prototype development and practical engineering challenges.
Gain exposure to sovereign UK propulsion capability for uncrewed applications.
Initial six-month contract with potential for extension or permanent employment.
