Job Description: Mechanical Package Owner
### Overview
The Mechanical Package Owner is responsible for the end-to-end technical ownership of a mechanical project package. This role leads mechanical engineering delivery, ensuring design compliance, integration with other disciplines, quality of outputs, and adherence to programme and cost requirements.
### Key Responsibilities
Own the mechanical design package from concept through design freeze, procurement support, fabrication/installation coordination, and close-out.
Define technical requirements and acceptance criteria for the mechanical package (e.g., design basis, standards, interfaces, documentation).
Lead package engineering activities, including design reviews, calculations oversight, drawings and datasheet readiness, and issue management.
Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, project specifications, codes, and regulatory requirements.
Manage interfaces with other disciplines (civil/structural, piping, electrical, controls, HVAC, process, safety, construction/commissioning).
Drive engineering governance: manage design reviews, technical queries, risk registers, and action tracking.
Support procurement by developing technical scopes, specifications, vendor requirements, and evaluating vendor submissions where required.
Coordinate with suppliers and internal teams to ensure design intent is translated into buildable and compliant outputs.
Provide technical leadership during manufacturing, FAT/SAT support, installation support, and commissioning readiness.
Monitor mechanical design progress against programme; escalate issues and propose mitigation plans.
Support change management: assess impacts of change requests on design, cost, schedule, and interfaces.
Maintain traceability of design decisions and documentation completeness, ensuring auditable records.
### Accountabilities
Technical ownership of the mechanical package deliverables and their compliance with project requirements.
Delivery of package outputs to schedule and at required quality levels.
Effective management of technical risk and integration across interfaces.
Clear communication of status, decisions, and technical constraints to stakeholders.
### Skills & Experience
Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Demonstrable experience owning mechanical engineering packages within projects (e.g., EPC, industrial, energy, rail, marine, facilities).
Strong working knowledge of mechanical engineering standards and design practices relevant to the sector.
Experience with engineering documentation and design assurance (drawings, specifications, calculations, datasheets).
Proven ability to lead technical reviews and manage technical queries (including root-cause and corrective actions).
Strong interface management capability across multi-discipline engineering teams.
Experience engaging with vendors/suppliers and reviewing technical submissions.
Working knowledge of QA/QC and document control processes.
### Competencies
Technical leadership and sound engineering judgement.
Clear stakeholder communication and ability to influence without authority.
Structured problem-solving and risk-focused mindset.
Commercial awareness and ability to balance technical and delivery constraints.
Ownership mentality and accountability for outcomes.
### Typical Deliverables (Examples)
Mechanical design basis and technical requirements for the package
Mechanical calculations and design reports
Drawings (as applicable) and datasheets/specifications
Interface documents and package integration plans
Design review packs, technical query logs, and action registers
Vendor technical requirements, submittal reviews, and technical acceptance outputs
Installation and commissioning support documentation (as required)
