We're looking for a Specialist Cleaning Technician to join an environmental services team working aboard naval ships in Plymouth.

To find out more, contact Beth on or call .

The role

You'll carry out specialist cleaning across shipboard tanks, bilges, compartments and ventilation systems. The work involves handling clean water, wastewater, oil and chemicals, using specialist equipment and following clear safety procedures.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out specialist cleaning, servicing and associated maintenance tasks.
  • Using high-pressure washing equipment and vacuum tanker systems.
  • Supporting the pumping and transfer of liquids and waste between ship and shore.
  • Working inside tanks, bilges and other confined spaces.
  • Moving hoses and equipment around ships, including up and down stairs and ladders.
  • Following health, safety, waste management and environmental procedures.
  • Completing job paperwork accurately.
  • Supporting other trades and carrying out fire sentry duties when required.
  • Keeping equipment and work areas clean and organised.
What we're looking for

Previous experience is welcome but is not essential. We're interested in people who:

  • Are willing to learn specialist cleaning methods and safe working procedures.
  • Can carry out physical duties, including moving hoses and equipment.
  • Are comfortable working in confined spaces and aboard ships.
  • Are comfortable with work involving wastewater, oil and chemicals.
  • Work reliably as part of a team and follow instructions carefully.
  • Can reliably reach the Plymouth site for a 07:30 start.

A driving licence would be useful for moving vehicles and equipment around the site or between locations, but it is not essential.

Experience in industrial cleaning, drainage, waste management, marine work, construction, labouring or the Armed Forces could transfer well.

Working environment

This is a physically active role. You will move around ships using stairs and ladders and work in enclosed areas such as tanks and bilges.

Some equipment and hoses can weigh up to approximately 40kg, shared between two people.

You must be willing to meet the clean-shaven requirement for the face-fitting respiratory protection used during the work.

Pay and working arrangements
  • £26,780 annual basic salary.
  • Monday to Friday, 07:30-16:00.
  • 40 paid hours per week.
  • 30-minute unpaid lunch each day.
  • Optional overtime paid at time and a half, including weekends.
  • Opportunities to progress within the business.
  • Company vehicles available for work duties where required.

We're looking for someone to start as soon as possible, subject to the recruitment and onboarding process.
