A nationally established, entrepreneurial business is looking to appoint a Tax & Compliance Manager to play a key role in developing its in-house tax function.

You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of a broad range of tax activities, work closely with senior finance colleagues and operational stakeholders, and help shape processes across a sizeable, multi site organisation.

This is a role for someone who enjoys the technical detail but also wants to understand the bigger picture. Working alongside external professional advisers, you’ll bring more day-to-day tax responsibility in-house, strengthen compliance and controls, and identify opportunities to make the function more efficient.

You’ll have the scope to develop your expertise, develop relationships across the business and see the direct impact of your work.

The role offers a varied remit across indirect and direct tax, combining hands-on responsibility with opportunities to influence processes and support the wider business.

Duties include:

  • Taking full ownership of day-to-day tax compliance, ensuring VAT, CIS and other tax returns are accurate, submitted on time and any issues resolved.
  • Leading the corporation tax process, working with external advisers and the finance team to ensure the business meets its obligations.
  • Managing wider tax reporting and deadlines, keeping everything organised, accurate and on track.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for various sites and teams across the business, providing practical guidance and taking ownership of tax queries through to resolution.
  • Maintaining strong controls and accurate records, while taking the lead on supporting HMRC enquiries and external audits when required.
  • Challenging existing processes and driving improvements to make tax reporting more efficient and effective.
  • Working with the wider finance team to improve systems, introduce smarter ways of working and help shape the future of the in-house tax function.

What will you bring?

You’ll ideally have practical UK tax compliance experience, particularly in VAT, alongside an understanding of corporation tax and experience working with external advisers.

Your background could be in industry or practice; what matters is your ability to take ownership, manage competing priorities and apply your knowledge in a practical business environment.

You’ll also bring:

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines without losing sight of the bigger picture.
  • The confidence to communicate tax matters clearly to people without a technical tax background.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach, with an interest in improving processes and strengthening controls.
  • Good Excel skills and experience using ERP or finance systems.
  • An accounting or tax qualification, or progress towards one, is preferred but not essential.

Why consider the move?

This is an opportunity to step into a broader tax role within a substantial, growing business, where you can develop beyond routine compliance and play an active part in shaping the function.

You’ll gain exposure to a diverse range of tax matters, work closely with senior finance colleagues and operational stakeholders, and have the opportunity to influence how tax is managed across the organisation.

For someone looking to develop their technical capability while developing a stronger commercial understanding, it offers a compelling combination of responsibility, variety and scope to make a difference.
