Internal Sales Engineer

Salary: £35,000 - £38,000 per annum

Hours: 37.75 hours per week

A leading engineering and manufacturing business is looking to appoint an experienced Internal Sales Engineer to join its technical sales team in Leicester.

This is an excellent opportunity for an electrically qualified or technically minded sales professional to join a growing engineering environment, acting as a key point of contact for customers and working closely with Engineering, Contracts and Production teams.

The successful candidate will combine technical engineering knowledge with strong customer and commercial skills, understanding customer requirements, developing appropriate technical solutions and preparing accurate quotations to help secure profitable business.

The Role

As an Internal Sales Engineer, you will be a front-line contact for customers, managing technical enquiries from initial contact through to quotation and order.

You will develop strong customer relationships, provide technical support and work closely with internal departments to ensure customer requirements are understood and delivered effectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage customer enquiries via telephone, email and face-to-face contact.
• Understand, interpret and clarify customer technical requirements.
• Develop appropriate technical solutions and preliminary designs to meet customer needs.
• Prepare accurate, detailed and commercially competitive quotations and tenders.
• Follow up quotations proactively to secure profitable orders.
• Maintain strong technical knowledge of products, applications and relevant industry requirements.
• Provide pre-sales technical expertise and product information to new and existing customers.
• Ensure customer orders are processed efficiently and that all relevant technical information is passed to Engineering and Manufacturing.
• Keep customers regularly informed of order progress and resolve any issues promptly.
• Maintain accurate records of enquiries, quotations, orders and customer activity.
• Identify and pursue new business opportunities.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and prospective customers.
• Carry out occasional customer and site visits.
• Work closely with Contracts, Engineering and Production teams to ensure customer requirements are delivered.
• Contribute towards achieving agreed sales and order intake targets.
• Support delivery, quality and customer satisfaction objectives.
• Ensure all activities are undertaken in accordance with relevant Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures.

About You

We are looking for a technically capable and customer-focused individual who can confidently understand engineering requirements and translate them into commercially viable solutions.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Good understanding of electrical engineering.
• HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic or Control Engineering, or an equivalent engineering apprenticeship.
• Previous experience in a similar customer-facing technical or sales engineering role.
• Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong technical mindset with the ability to read, understand and interpret technical information.
• Ability to explain technical information clearly to customers and colleagues.
• Strong problem-solving approach.
• Confident use of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
• Highly organised, accurate and detail-focused.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
• Commercial awareness and an understanding of the importance of securing profitable business.

Desirable Experience

• Degree in Electrical, Electronic or Control Engineering.
• Experience working with major OEMs, engineering contractors or international customers.
• Previous experience or knowledge of high-power or high-voltage electrical applications.
• Experience working within a technical engineering or manufacturing environment.

Working Hours

Standard working hours are 8:15am–5:00pm Monday to Thursday and 8:15am–1:00pm on Friday, with some flexibility potentially available.

Location & Travel

The role is based in Leicester. Occasional national and international travel may be required for customer and site visits.
