Management Accountant

Location: Denbigh, North Wales
Salary: £38,000-£44,000 DOE
Working pattern: Full-time, office-based Permanent

The opportunity

I'm recruiting for an established and growing multi-site business based in Denbigh that is looking to appoint an experienced Management Accountant to join its finance team. This is a varied, hands-on position offering much more than a traditional month-end role. Reporting directly to the CFO, you'll take ownership of accounting across a number of group entities while also getting involved in budgeting, forecasting, financial controls, systems improvements, process automation and the integration of new sites and acquisitions.

A key initial project will be bringing the accounting for several smaller group companies fully in-house, so this would particularly suit someone who enjoys taking ownership, improving processes and getting underneath the numbers.

Key responsibilities

  • Bring the accounting for smaller group companies in-house, working alongside external accountants to establish accurate opening balances and supporting records.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheets, journals, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Complete month-end schedules accurately and within agreed deadlines.
  • Own allocated balance sheet reconciliations and investigate and resolve historical discrepancies.
  • Manage intercompany reconciliations across multiple group entities.
  • Maintain fixed asset registers and capital expenditure records, including additions, disposals and depreciation.
  • Monitor expenditure against budgets and investigate significant variances.
  • Prepare and maintain budgets, forecasts and cash-flow forecasts.
  • Maintain debt, hire-purchase and covenant schedules.
  • Reconcile revenue and customer finance information between operational and accounting systems.
  • Prepare detailed financial analysis and supporting schedules for senior finance colleagues and external advisers.
  • Support year-end accounting and provide accurate records and explanations.
  • Take ownership of finance projects covering process improvement, automation and systems development.
  • Support the financial integration of new sites and acquisitions.
  • Work with external system providers to test changes and strengthen financial controls.
  • Document processes and help build effective cover across the finance function.

What we're looking for
You'll ideally have strong practical management accounting experience and be comfortable taking ownership of your own workload with limited supervision. You could be AAT qualified, ACCA/CIMA part-qualified, fully qualified or qualified by experience, provided you can demonstrate the right level of practical experience. You'll ideally have strong experience across:

  • Management accounts and month-end
  • Journals, accruals and prepayments
  • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Variance analysis
  • Fixed asset accounting
  • Cash-flow forecasting
  • Financial controls
  • Multi-entity accounting and intercompany reconciliations
  • Excel and accounting systems
  • Investigating and resolving accounting discrepancies
  • Process and systems improvements

Experience with Sage 200 or Sage 50 would be advantageous, as would previous exposure to acquisitions, new-site integrations, automation or bringing accounting processes in-house.
Most importantly, you'll be someone who is naturally curious and proactive. You'll be comfortable questioning existing processes, investigating discrepancies and suggesting practical improvements rather than simply following what has always been done.

What's on offer?

  • £38,000-£44,000 salary, depending on experience
  • 28 days' annual leave, increasing incrementally to 33 days after five years
  • Additional 1.5 days' leave over the Christmas period
  • Free on-site parking
  • Training and development opportunities
  • Annual pay review
  • 5 days' paid sickness leave per year
  • At least two fully paid company social events each year
  • Modern, spacious office environment with refreshments provided
  • Supportive and well-connected team

Please note: This is a fully office-based position in Denbigh and cannot be carried out remotely.

If you're a Management Accountant who enjoys having genuine ownership of your work and wants exposure to projects, systems improvements and a growing multi-entity environment, I'd be keen to hear from you.
