Circa £55,000 + Bonus + Overtime + Benefits
Tilbury, Essex
SCINERGY Recruitment are currently recruiting for multiple Shift Operations Technicians to join a brand-new Energy from Waste power station at Tilbury Docks in Essex.
This new EFW facility is currently under construction and, once operational, will process over 350,000 tonnes of waste per year while generating enough energy to power the equivalent of 93,000 homes.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a modern, high-performance power generation facility during an exciting phase of its development. As a Shift Operations Technician, you will play a key role in the safe, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of the plant, working alongside the Shift Team Leader and wider operations team to maintain reliable power generation around the clock.
The position will involve operating and monitoring high-pressure boiler systems, the steam turbine, flue gas treatment and auxiliary plant via the Distributed Control System (DCS), alongside carrying out field-based inspections and operational duties. You will also have the opportunity to support commissioning, plant start-up and optimisation activities as the facility progresses towards full operation.
The Role
Key responsibilities will include:
Starting, stopping and monitoring high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, pumps, water treatment systems, heat exchangers and associated balance of plant through the DCS
Carrying out regular plant inspections, identifying abnormalities and making operational adjustments to support safe and efficient performance
Monitoring flue gas treatment systems, Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and key operating parameters to maintain environmental compliance
Undertaking basic first-line maintenance, fault identification and defect reporting, escalating issues to the Shift Team Leader and maintenance team
Supporting plant start-ups, shutdowns, isolations and planned maintenance activities in line with site procedures and safe systems of work
Assisting with commissioning, testing, operational readiness and plant optimisation as the new facility is brought into service
Maintaining clear and accurate shift logs, operating records, plant checks and handover information
Working closely with colleagues across operations and maintenance to maximise plant availability and minimise unplanned downtime
Promoting high standards of health, safety, environmental compliance and housekeeping across the site
About You
You will ideally have:
Experience in an operational or shift technician role within Energy from Waste, biomass, CCGT, CHP, thermal generation, petrochemical, refining, chemical processing or a similar high-pressure steam/process plant environment
Experience operating process plant using a DCS or other computer-based control system, supported by practical field operating experience
A relevant engineering qualification such as an apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds, ONC, HNC or equivalent
A sound understanding of safe systems of work, plant operating procedures and health, safety and environmental requirements
An ability to identify operational issues, respond to changing plant conditions and communicate effectively within a shift team
Merchant Navy or Royal Navy engineering experience involving significant plant watchkeeping will also be considered
A flexible approach and willingness to work 12-hour shifts covering days and nights
