Luma Education Recruitment is looking for an SEN Science Teacher to join a specialist SEND school near Totnes, South Devon. You'll teach science to small classes of primary and secondary-aged pupils who are working well below age-related expectations. Lessons are practical and hands-on: real objects, simple experiments, visuals and plenty of repetition, with concepts broken down into small steps. Primary-trained teachers with a love of science are just as welcome as secondary science specialists.

About the School

A small specialist school for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, set on a rural estate in South Devon. Classes are small, and staff work in a relational, therapeutic way, with trusting relationships at the centre of every lesson. Alongside classroom subjects, pupils take part in outdoor learning, life skills and vocational pathways, and the school is FASD-informed.

The Role

  • Planning and teaching science to small groups of primary and secondary-aged pupils with lower attainment and a range of SEND
  • Turning topics into short, practical activities using experiments, visuals and sensory resources
  • Taking science outdoors, from plant growth and weather to materials and habitats
  • Setting small, achievable targets and tracking progress against each pupil's individual plan
  • Working closely with teaching assistants, therapists and the pastoral team
  • Building steady, trusting relationships so pupils feel safe to try new things

What You'll Need

  • QTS, or solid experience teaching science in a SEND or alternative provision setting (unqualified teachers and instructors will be considered)
  • Experience teaching pupils with SEND, ideally learners working at pre-key stage or entry level
  • Confidence adapting science content for lower ability learners across primary and secondary ages
  • A calm, consistent and relational approach in the classroom

You'll be patient, warm and organised, and enjoy finding a way into a topic for a pupil who finds learning hard.
