SEN Teaching Assistant (Year 1)
Location: Leigh
Position: SEN Teaching Assistant (Support for 2 Children in Year 1)
Contract Type: Temporary (Initially until Christmas, with potential to extend)
About the Role
Tradewind Recruitment is currently working in partnership with a welcoming primary school in Leigh to recruit a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant.
This is a rewarding, hands-on role working on a split basis to support two Year 1 pupils. Both children are working at very low academic levels and are currently non-verbal. You will play a vital role in helping them engage with the school environment, developing their communication skills, and ensuring they feel safe, supported, and included in school life.
The position is offered on an initial temporary basis until Christmas, with a strong possibility of extension for the right candidate as the school looks at ongoing support for the children.
Key Responsibilities
Provide tailored 1-to-1 and small-group support to two Year 1 pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
Assist in implementing individual education plans (IEPs) and supporting alternative communication strategies (such as Makaton, PECS, or visual schedules).
Create a calm, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment tailored to early years development.
Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and external specialists to monitor and record pupil progress.
Help build the children's confidence, independence, and social interaction skills within the classroom.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experience: Previous experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly early years or KS1, and familiarity with non-verbal communication methods.
Attributes: Patient, resilient, empathetic, and passionate about inclusive education.
Qualifications: A relevant childcare, education, or SEN qualification (e.g., Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning) is advantageous, though strong practical experience is equally valued.
Must hold (or be willing to apply for) an enhanced DBS check registered on the update service.
CV must cover the last 10 years of employment history where possible, and any employment breaks must be explained.
Legal right to work in the UK.
