ABOUT THE FIRM

A. Infantino & Co is a long-established, independent accountancy practice on Hoddesdon High Street, serving owner-managed businesses, sole traders, landlords and individuals across Hertfordshire and North London.

In 2026 the practice has come under new leadership. The new owners are investing in the firm: updating systems and the way it works, building a positive, supportive culture, and growing the practice.

We are a close-knit team of around 15 people. That size means you will know every client you work on, you will see the impact of your work, and you will have direct access to the directors. As the firm grows, there is genuine room to grow with it.

What we stand for:

  • Clients first – accurate, timely work and clear, friendly communication.
  • Quality and ownership – we take responsibility for our portfolios and get things right.
  • Team – we share knowledge, back each other up and invest in people's development.
  • Progress – we are open to better ways of working and the right technology.
THE ROLE

You will manage the bookkeeping and VAT compliance for your own portfolio of clients from source records through to finalised, review-ready figures, so our accountants can focus on year-end accounts, tax and advisory work. This is a hands-on senior role for someone who can run a workload independently and be the reliable point of contact for clients.

Bookkeeping
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date books for a varied portfolio of clients across different sectors and software packages.
  • Process sales and purchase invoices, expenses, bank and credit card transactions.
  • Complete bank, control account and balance sheet reconciliations monthly or quarterly.
  • Prepare management information and trial balances to a standard ready for accountant review and year-end.
  • Post journals, including accruals, prepayments and depreciation, where required.
  • Chase and organise client records so deadlines are met.
VAT
  • Prepare and submit quarterly and monthly VAT returns under Making Tax Digital.
  • Apply the right scheme for each client: standard, cash accounting, flat rate and, where relevant, partial exemption.
  • Handle VAT queries and registrations, and flag issues or planning points to the client's accountant.
  • Keep an accurate VAT deadline schedule across your portfolio.
Making Tax Digital (MTD)
  • Keep compliant digital records for all clients in MTD-ready software (Sage, Xero and bridging tools where needed).
  • Prepare and submit quarterly updates under MTD for Income Tax for sole trader and landlord clients.
  • Help clients get set up and stay compliant with MTD, including digital links and record-keeping.
  • Flag clients approaching the MTD thresholds so the team can plan their transition early.
Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
  • Prepare and file monthly CIS returns for contractor clients.
  • Verify subcontractors with HMRC and issue payment and deduction statements.
  • Track CIS suffered by subcontractor clients and reconcile it for payroll or tax returns.
  • Apply the domestic reverse charge for construction services correctly in VAT returns.
Payroll support
  • Support the payroll team with weekly and monthly payroll processing.
  • Help with RTI submissions, auto-enrolment pension duties, starters and leavers, and year-end tasks.
  • Provide cover during peak periods and absences.
Clients and team
  • Be the day-to-day contact for your clients on bookkeeping and VAT: responsive, clear and professional.
  • Work closely with the accountants who prepare your clients' year-end accounts and tax returns.
  • Spot opportunities to improve clients' record keeping and move them onto cloud software.
  • Support and share knowledge with junior colleagues as the team grows.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

We are looking for a confident, organised bookkeeper with at least four years' experience, ideally gained in an accountancy practice. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, CIS and payroll experience are a real advantage but not essential; we will train the right person.

Essential
  • 4+ years' bookkeeping experience, preferably in a small to mid-sized practice handling multiple clients.
  • Proven experience preparing and submitting VAT returns under Making Tax Digital.
  • Confident with reconciliations, control accounts and preparing records to trial balance.
  • Confident user of Sage and Xero; experience of other packages such as QuickBooks is welcome.
  • Good Excel skills.
  • Strong organisation: able to manage competing deadlines across a portfolio.
  • Clear, professional communication with clients by phone and email.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
Desirable
  • Experience of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, including quarterly updates for sole traders and landlords.
  • Experience of the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), including monthly returns and the domestic reverse charge.
  • Payroll experience: RTI, auto-enrolment and year-end.
  • AAT Level 3 or 4, ICB, or working towards a professional qualification.
  • Experience with receipt-capture tools such as Dext or AutoEntry.
WHAT WE OFFER

A competitive salary, a stable and growing firm, and the chance to shape how a modernising practice works.

  • Salary dependant on experience.
  • Generous holiday allowance that increases with length of service, plus bank holidays and an extra day off for your birthday every year.
  • Workplace pension.
  • Study support for AAT or other professional qualifications, available on application.
  • Hybrid working negotiable, but the role is expected to be majority office-based.
  • Regular CPD and training, including on CIS and payroll if you are new to them.
