If you are an experienced legal cashiering professional currently working in a law firm and looking for a role that genuinely reflects your depth of expertise, this is worth reading.
Our client is a market-leading international law firm advising major corporations, funds and financial institutions on complex, high-value matters across multiple jurisdictions. The firm combines deep commercial understanding with a commitment to exceptional client service, and operates a collaborative, supportive environment in which people are given the tools and development they need to do their best work.
This is a permanent role based in London, sitting within the firm's client account function and supporting cashiering operations across several of the firm's international offices. You will take ownership of the full client account cashiering cycle, operating in line with the SRA Accounts Rules 2019, AML regulations and internal financial controls.
What you'll be doing
Client Account Transactions and Payments
- Prepare, authorise and process electronic payments and receipts across client and office accounts, in line with internal controls and agreed service standards.
- Maintain detailed, accurate transaction records so that client account activity is clearly documented and readily reviewable.
- Review multi-currency client account bank statements on a daily basis, ensuring incoming funds are identified and receipts are processed without delay.
- Post all types of client account payments and receipts accurately and within internal Service Level Agreements.
- Investigate and resolve unallocated monies, confirming correct allocation and ensuring each item receives appropriate treatment.
Regulatory Compliance and Financial Controls
- Carry out daily compliance monitoring against the SRA Accounts Rules, reporting and addressing any exceptions or breaches in line with internal procedures.
- Apply AML procedures consistently, including payee cross-referencing and any additional checks required by the firm.
- Ensure all processing activity meets relevant VAT, AML and client account requirements.
- Take a proactive, questioning approach to discrepancies, raising and resolving issues promptly rather than allowing them to remain open.
- Apply the firm's financial controls and policies consistently across all cashiering activities.
Reconciliations, Client Interest and Residual Balances
- Calculate and apply client interest accurately in accordance with the firm's procedures.
- Support the investigation and resolution of outstanding bank reconciliation items.
- Assist with the reconciliation of residual client account balances, maintaining thorough and accurate records throughout.
Client Service and Query Handling
- Work collaboratively with the wider client account team to deliver a consistent, reliable service across all offices supported.
- Interpret client ledgers clearly and accurately to address transaction and balance queries from colleagues and clients.
- Communicate with professionalism and adaptability, adjusting explanations to suit different audiences without compromising on accuracy.
- Serve as a point of contact for client account queries, providing timely and well-considered support.
Audit, Deadlines and Continuous Improvement
- Support internal and external audit activity, including the SRA Accounts Rules audit, by providing accurate records and responding clearly to queries.
- Contribute ideas for process improvement, helping to enhance service delivery and consistency whilst maintaining required controls.
- Meet strict month-end and year-end deadlines whilst maintaining high standards of quality throughout.
- Support broader team projects and initiatives alongside day-to-day cashiering responsibilities.
- Manage a varied workload effectively, remaining flexible and prioritising well when demands shift.
What we're looking for
- Currently working within a law firm, with extensive hands-on responsibility for client account cashiering.
- A minimum of three years' legal cashiering experience, with demonstrable depth across the full client account cycle.
- Thorough working knowledge of the SRA Accounts Rules and AML regulations, applied confidently in a day-to-day cashiering context.
- Proven experience processing high-value transactions within a busy, team-based environment.
- A clear understanding of relevant VAT requirements and the role of robust internal financial controls.
- The ability to read and interpret client ledgers accurately and investigate transaction or balance discrepancies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to explain financial matters clearly to a range of audiences.
- Well-organised, reliable and able to deliver accurate work to strict deadlines under pressure.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in a client account cashiering role within a global law firm.
- Familiarity with Aderant Expert or Elite.
