Highways Maintenance Design Engineer

• Hourly Rate: £45
• Location: Doncaster, Hybrid (with regular site visits)
• Job Type: Temporary Contract, Full-time (Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm)

We are seeking an experienced Highways Maintenance Design Engineer to support a busy highways programme. This role offers an immediate start with the potential for a long-term assignment, depending on ongoing programme requirements. The successful candidate will manage highways maintenance schemes from initial investigation through to construction support and completion, requiring both office and site-based work. They should also be comfortable working across design, site investigation, levelling, tender preparation, construction support, and scheme completion rather than specialising in only one aspect of the process.

Day-to-day of the role:

• Investigate existing highway network issues and determine appropriate maintenance solutions.
• Produce highway maintenance designs and associated technical documentation.
• Prepare bills of quantities, specifications, and tender documentation.
• Support schemes through procurement and construction stages.
• Undertake site supervision and site setting-out activities.
• Respond to technical queries arising during construction.
• Manage projects through the full lifecycle from concept to completion.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Proven experience as a Highways Maintenance Design Engineer.
• Experience delivering schemes on existing highway networks.
• Ability to manage projects through the complete design and delivery process.
• Competence in undertaking levelling and site measurement activities.
• Strong experience preparing bills of quantities and tender documentation.
• Robust site supervision and construction support experience.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple schemes.

Desirable Experience:

• Experience working within a local authority highways environment.
• Broad practical experience across design, site work, and scheme delivery.
• Relevant engineering qualifications.

Working Arrangements:

• Hybrid working arrangement with a minimum expectation of three days per week in the office.
• Regular site attendance is required.
• Initial interviews may be conducted remotely, with a face-to-face meeting forming part of the selection process.
