Mental Health Assistant - Thatcham

Location: Thatcham, Berkshire
Start Date: ASAP
Pay Scale: £90-£105 per day

Are you interested in mental health, psychology and the factors that influence children's emotional wellbeing?

Would you like to gain practical experience supporting young people in a specialist educational setting?

A supportive specialist school in Thatcham is looking for a compassionate and proactive Mental Health Assistant to join its team as soon as possible. This is an excellent opportunity for Psychology graduates, aspiring mental health professionals and experienced support staff looking to develop their skills while making a positive difference to young people's lives.

As a Mental Health Assistant, you will work with pupils who may experience anxiety, emotional difficulties, low self-esteem, behavioural challenges or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Some students may also have additional needs, including ASD or ADHD, which can affect their ability to manage emotions and engage with learning.

You will provide consistent emotional support, helping pupils develop confidence, build positive relationships and manage the challenges they encounter throughout the school day. Working closely with teachers and other professionals, you will contribute to a safe and supportive environment where pupils feel understood and encouraged.

As a Mental Health Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing individualised support to pupils experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties.
  • Helping students develop healthy coping mechanisms and emotional regulation skills.
  • Encouraging positive relationships, social interaction and self-confidence.
  • Supporting pupils to engage with classroom activities and daily routines.
  • Recognising when pupils may need additional support and communicating concerns to relevant staff.
  • Working collaboratively with the wider school team to promote pupil wellbeing.

This Mental Health Assistant role offers valuable experience for graduates considering careers in clinical psychology, educational psychology, counselling, psychotherapy or mental health support.

You do not necessarily need previous school-based experience. The school is looking for someone who is patient, empathetic, reliable and keen to learn.

If you are an aspiring Mental Health Assistant who wants to develop practical experience while supporting young people with additional needs, this could be an excellent opportunity.
