The job holder will manage a specialist workshop that reflects the standards and expectations of a commercial print environment. They will combine production management with vocational training, mentoring and rehabilitation, helping prisoners develop practical skills, professional behaviours and stronger employment prospects on release.

The successful candidate must demonstrate substantial print-production experience and will be responsible for meeting customer specifications, maintaining accurate training and production records, and ensuring consistently high standards of quality, safety, security and professional conduct. Training on prison-specific systems and equipment will be provided where required.

Responsibilities, Activities and Duties

  • Plan and manage production schedules, allocate work appropriately, and support the achievement of quality and delivery targets.
  • Provide quality assurance against product and customer specifications, and ensure technical instructions are interpreted accurately.
  • Supervise prisoners and maintain discipline within the workshop, including searching areas and prisoners in accordance with local procedures.
  • Maintain regular radio communications in accordance with the Local Security Strategy, and ensure all workshop activity complies with prison security procedures and local policies.
  • Assess prisoner performance and contribute to progress reviews, parole reports and sentence planning.
  • Complete equipment checks, maintenance planning, workshop risk assessments and self-audits; contribute to Service Delivery Indicators (SDIs); and promote a culture of rehabilitation, responsibility and professionalism.

The duties/responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present and is not intended to be exhaustive. Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone's circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ's terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
