Overview

Join the Street Scene team within the Regeneration & Economic Growth Directorate and play a key role in maintaining and enhancing public spaces across the district. This position is ideal for individuals with a passion for horticulture and community well-being, contributing to cleaner, safer, and greener neighbourhoods.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out a wide range of horticultural and grounds maintenance duties under the direction of senior staff, ensuring high standards of service delivery.
  • Operate machinery and equipment including ride-on and pedestrian mowers, tractors, strimmers, hedge cutters, and back-pack blowers.
  • Undertake planting, bed preparation, shrub maintenance, and pitch marking.
  • Follow scheduled work routes, adapting to seasonal requirements and resident needs.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring safe use and proper upkeep.
  • Apply hand-held pest control treatments (subject to relevant training and certification).
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and provide guidance to Assistant Gardeners.
  • Respond to emergency situations and support other services where required, including:
    • Fencing repairs
    • Winter gritting
    • Street cleansing

Qualifications & Requirements

  • NVQ Level 1 or City & Guilds Level 1 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • PA1, PA2 and PA6 Pesticide Application Certificates.
  • Full UK Driving Licence (Category C1+E) with no more than 6 penalty points.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in grounds maintenance.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety at Work regulations.
  • Knowledge of general horticultural practices.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Physically fit to undertake outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
