Primary - Sen Teaching Assistant

To support pupils with complex special educational needs within the SURF Unit, providing targeted 1:1 and small group support. The role focuses on enabling pupils to access learning, develop communication and social skills, and regulate behaviour in a structured, nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Pupil Support

  • Provide specialised 1:1 and small group support for pupils with additional needs (e.g. ASD, SEMH, communication needs)
  • Implement EHCP targets and personalised learning programmes
  • Support pupils with sensory, emotional, and behavioural regulation
  • Promote independence, social interaction, and life skills
  • Assist pupils with transitions between the SURF unit and mainstream classrooms (where appropriate)

Teaching & Learning

  • Support delivery of adapted and highly differentiated learning activities
  • Use visual supports, structured routines, and specialist strategies (e.g. TEACCH, now/next, visual timetables)
  • Reinforce literacy, numeracy, and communication development at an appropriate level
  • Work closely with teachers to prepare resources and adapt materials

Behaviour & Regulation

  • Apply agreed behaviour support plans consistently
  • Support pupils in managing anxiety, sensory needs, and emotional regulation
  • Use de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour approaches
  • Provide a calm, predictable, and safe learning environment

Monitoring & Communication

  • Observe and record pupil progress against EHCP targets
  • Contribute to reviews, assessments, and reports
  • Maintain clear records of behaviour, engagement, and learning
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, SENCo, therapists, and parents/carers

Teamwork & Professional Practice

  • Work collaboratively as part of the SURF Unit team and wider school staff
  • Liaise with external professionals (e.g. speech and language therapists, educational psychologists)
  • Participate in training relevant to SEN and specialist provision
  • Contribute to the inclusive ethos of the school

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with children with significant SEN needs (e.g. ASD, SEMH, speech & language needs)
  • Understanding of EHCPs and personalised learning approaches
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Patience, resilience, and a calm, consistent approach
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills

Desirable

  • Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent)
  • Experience working in a specialist provision or resource base
  • Knowledge of autism strategies (e.g. TEACCH, PECS)
  • Training in behaviour management (e.g. Team Teach or equivalent)
  • Understanding of sensory processing needs
