Role Overview

Working under the direction of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), this role is focused on delivering effective family support as part of an integrated Early Help approach. The postholder will work with children, young people, and their families to improve outcomes, ensure safeguarding responsibilities are met, and promote positive engagement with education.

Key Responsibilities

Family Support

Provide direct support to families experiencing a range of challenges, including additional needs, safeguarding concerns, parenting difficulties, financial pressures, and barriers to accessing education. Undertake assessments using recognised frameworks such as Early Help and the 6P model to identify needs and implement appropriate support.

Work collaboratively with parents/carers to develop practical strategies that improve outcomes. Manage and contribute to Early Help Plans, acting as Lead Professional when required, and coordinate support through multi-agency working.

Support families with practical tasks such as completing forms, accessing benefits, and arranging transport. Signpost and refer to specialist services where appropriate, monitoring engagement and progress. Home visits may be required, following established lone working procedures.

Safeguarding & Child Protection

Support the DSL in ensuring all safeguarding procedures are followed in line with statutory guidance. Respond to concerns promptly, making referrals where required and maintaining accurate records using appropriate systems.

Prepare reports and attend safeguarding and child protection meetings. Work closely with other professionals, including social care, and provide guidance to colleagues where appropriate. Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Attendance & Engagement

Promote positive attendance by working with families to address barriers and improve engagement with education. Liaise with attendance, behaviour, and pastoral teams to support consistent approaches and improved outcomes.

Partnership Working

Work in collaboration with internal teams and external agencies including education, health, and social care professionals. Contribute to Team Around the Child processes and support the coordination of multi-agency planning.

Record Keeping & Professional Practice

Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date records of all work undertaken, including Early Help Plans, interventions, and referrals. Monitor and review progress, closing cases appropriately in line with guidance.

Participate in supervision, training, and ongoing professional development. Remain up to date with current legislation and best practice in safeguarding and family support.

Additional Duties

Work flexibly across provisions as required. Provide support and advice to colleagues on family support and safeguarding matters. Contribute to whole-setting priorities, particularly around safeguarding, attendance, and wellbeing. Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role.
