National Payroll Director

Multiple Locations in the UK (Hybrid – 3 days office / 2 home + travel)

Circa £100,000 – £120,000

Contract: Permanent

The Role

A strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing a national payroll function across a large, multi-client and multi-location environment.

You’ll lead the payroll operating model across UK and offshore teams, driving transformation, scalability, and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and shape the national payroll strategy and operating model
• Oversee high-volume, multi-client payroll delivery across UK and offshore teams
• Drive transformation initiatives including automation, digitisation, and offshoring
• Manage relationships with payroll providers, offshore teams, and system vendors
• Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation, HMRC, pensions, RTI, and GDPR
• Oversee risk management, governance, and business continuity frameworks
• Monitor KPIs, service levels, and overall payroll performance
• Act as senior escalation point for complex payroll and client issues
• Support client relationship management and advisory services
• Lead system improvements, integrations, and reporting enhancements

The Ideal Candidate

• Extensive experience leading large-scale or national payroll functions
• Strong background in payroll bureau or professional services environments
• Experience managing offshore or global payroll delivery models
• Proven track record in payroll transformation and change programmes
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation and compliance
• Experience managing senior stakeholders and governance structures
• Strategic thinker with strong leadership and people development skills
