We are delighted to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established and highly regarded organisation based in Peterborough, who are looking to appoint an Assistant Accountant to join their Finance team on a permanent basis.

This opportunity is ideal for a part-qualified or early-career finance professional who is currently studying, or planning to study, towards an AAT or equivalent qualification and is seeking long-term career progression within a supportive business environment.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, the Assistant Accountant will play a key role in supporting accurate financial reporting and core accounting processes.

Key responsibilities will include:

Month-End & Reporting

  • Assisting with month-end close processes, including accruals, prepayments, and journals
  • Reconciling balance sheet accounts and investigating variances
  • Supporting the preparation of management accounts and financial reports
  • Assisting with budgeting and forecasting activities

Transactional Accounting

  • Supporting Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes
  • Reviewing ledger postings for accuracy and compliance
  • Resolving finance-related queries from suppliers and internal stakeholders

Compliance & Controls

  • Adhering to internal financial controls and procedures
  • Supporting audit processes, including preparation of audit schedules
  • Maintaining accurate financial records in line with accounting standards

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Using accounting and finance systems effectively
  • Identifying opportunities for process and reporting improvements
  • Supporting ad-hoc finance projects and analysis

The Candidate

Our client is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual with a strong desire to develop their accounting career.

Essential requirements:

  • Previous experience in a finance or accounting role
  • Studying towards Level 4 AAT or AAT qualified
  • Good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping
  • Strong Excel skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively

Desirable:

  • Experience assisting with management accounts
  • Knowledge of UK accounting standards
  • Experience using accounting or ERP systems
  • Confident communication skills
