Job Description: Temporary Assistant Headteacher (SEN School)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Headteacher to join a specialist SEN school in Leyland on a temporary basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong leader with a passion for inclusive education to make an immediate impact within a supportive and dynamic environment.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), supporting the Headteacher in driving school improvement, maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, and ensuring the best possible outcomes for pupils with Special Educational Needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Headteacher in the strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the school
• Lead on teaching and learning across the school, ensuring high-quality, inclusive practice
• Monitor and evaluate pupil progress, particularly for those with complex SEN needs
• Line manage teaching and support staff, providing coaching and performance management
• Contribute to the development and implementation of the School Improvement Plan
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding, SEND, and statutory requirements
• Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive school culture
• Work closely with parents, carers, and external agencies

Person Specification

Essential:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Proven leadership experience within a school setting (e.g. Assistant Head, Deputy Head, or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of SEND, including ASD and SEMH
• Experience of leading teaching and learning and improving outcomes
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Desirable:

• National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCo) or equivalent
• Experience working in a specialist SEN or alternative provision setting
• Experience managing staff and leading whole-school initiatives
