Traffic Operator – Containers & General Transport

Up to £32,000 (DOE) | Peterborough | 4 on / 4 off | 06:00–18:00 | Casual Dress

My client is seeking a confident and experienced Transport / Traffic Operator to join their busy Peterborough operation. This role offers a rare mix of container planning (50%) and general transport planning (50%), working with a wide range of trailers including curtainsiders, fridges, flatbeds and containers.

You’ll be joining a friendly, chatty team where everyone supports each other and where independence, common sense and a willingness to learn are genuinely valued.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Planning daily container and general transport loads (approx. 30 container movements and up to 90 general loads per shift).
  • Managing day-to-day driver dispatch each morning (6am) and preparing plans for the following day.
  • Producing accurate load plans and aligning with dock sailing times.
  • Booking containers with shipping lines and maintaining documentation.
  • Liaising closely with drivers, customers and internal depots.
  • Using ESP and Truckcom systems.
  • Updating delivery information and managing VBS bookings.
  • Handling customer queries and resolving issues quickly.
  • Supporting the team with holiday and sickness cover when required.
  • Contributing to a safe, well-organised and positive working environment.

About the Team & Environment

  • On-site role based at the Peterborough depot.
  • Works directly with the Transport Manager and liaises with other depots.
  • Team culture: friendly, down-to-earth, supportive and full of laughs.
  • Relaxed breaks — lunch and breaks flexible.
  • 4 on / 4 off, 06:00–18:00.
  • Casual dress code.
  • Structured onboarding: buddy system, followed by independent working.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong experience in a Transport Office / Traffic Office environment.
  • Container experience beneficial but not essential — training will be provided.
  • Confident managing drivers and handling difficult conversations professionally.
  • Able to work independently and think on your feet.
  • Keen to learn new systems and processes.
  • Strong communication skills with drivers, customers and internal teams.
  • IT literate and comfortable using transport systems.
  • CPC is a bonus but not required.
  • Enjoys working in a relaxed, friendly, fun team.
  • Thrives in a proactive environment where everyone stays engaged and supports each other.

What’s On Offer

  • Up to £32,000 depending on experience.
  • Pension (auto-enrolment).
  • A welcoming, long-standing team with a great sense of humour.

How the Process Works

  • Apply by submitting your CV.
  • If shortlisted, you’ll be invited for a 1-stage, face-to-face interview.
  • Fast turnaround for the right person.
