Team Manager
Coventry
£40,000 – £50,000 (DOE)
Reporting to: Head of Operations
About the Role
This is not a traditional “senior accountant plus management” position. Here, your team is your product. Your success is defined by a team that delivers accurate, profitable work on time and to a consistent standard.
You’ll operate as a true playing manager — spending around 50–60% of your time chargeable, supporting, coaching, and unblocking your team, with the remainder focused on leadership, performance management, and operational delivery.
You don’t need to be the strongest technical expert in the room. Instead, you’ll be the one who:
- Knows where every job sits
- Spots issues early
- Challenges weak estimates
- Keeps the entire delivery engine running smoothly
Key Responsibilities
-
Own team performance
- Deliver against fee targets
- Forecast performance weekly and proactively manage risks
-
Drive operational efficiency
- Ensure every job is budgeted and tracked
- Lead weekly red/amber/green reviews and act early
-
Lead and develop your team
- Run structured monthly 1:1s with clear outcomes
- Conduct six-month development reviews
- Ensure every team member has a clear pathway
-
Manage performance proactively
- Address underperformance early and confidently
- Stay ahead of issues — not react to them
-
Maintain quality and standards
- Uphold communication and delivery expectations
- Lead by example in both team and client interactions
-
Own problem resolution
- Take accountability for resolving client issues end-to-end
- Prevent repeat problems through process improvement

Experienced practice professionals ready to step into leadership
You’ve likely been informally leading teams, mentoring colleagues, and taking ownership — now you want the title and structure to match.
Managers whose people skills are underutilised
You naturally handle team dynamics, performance, and coaching — but your current role doesn’t formally recognise it.
Useful Experience
- 2+ years in accountancy practice (reviewer level or above)
- Experience across accounts production, corporation tax, personal tax, and business systems
- Exposure to team leadership (formal or informal)
- ACA/ACCA qualified (desirable, not essential)
Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Company car or car allowance (post-qualifying period)
- Profit share scheme (post-qualifying period)
- Private medical insurance (post-qualifying period)
- Free high-quality lunch 4 days per week
- 30 days holiday (including bank holidays)
- Flexible working hours
- Regular team events and reward lunches
- Ongoing professional development
- Supportive, collaborative working environment
A Straightforward Reality Check
This role isn’t for everyone.
- If you want to be the top technical expert, this isn’t the seat
- If you avoid difficult conversations, this will be challenging
- If you want to own every client relationship, this isn’t the focus
But if you thrive on leading people, driving performance, and building a team that delivers, this could be exactly what you’re looking for.
