About the Role

We are currently recruiting for a Payroll Assistant to join a busy local authority payroll team based in Maidenhead. This is a temporary role for a minimum of 3 months while permanent recruitment is underway, with an immediate start required.

You’ll play a key role in supporting a team responsible for 15 payrolls, providing essential administrative and customer service support at an assistant level.

Working Arrangements

  • Primarily remote, with flexibility
  • Mandatory initial training in Maidenhead Town Hall (minimum 2 days)
  • Flexible working pattern: 30 hours across 4 or 5 days

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide first-line payroll support to employees and managers
  • Respond to basic payroll and pension-related queries via email, phone and face-to-face
  • Escalate more complex queries to senior team members
  • Deliver professional, polite, and efficient customer service across all channels
  • Assist with routine payroll tasks, including:
    • Data entry
    • Checking employee records
    • Preparing information for payroll processing
  • Support monthly payroll activities, ensuring data is accurate and submitted on time
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll records
  • Follow established procedures to ensure compliance with payroll processes and data protection

Candidate Requirements

  • Strong English language and grammar skills (essential for written and verbal communication)
  • Able to confidently communicate with a wide range of staff, including:
    • PAYE employees
    • Fixed-term contract staff
    • Interim consultants
  • Previous payroll experience is beneficial
  • No requirement for complex taxation knowledge – full training provided
  • Experience using payroll systems is not essential – systems training will be given
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Customer-focused approach with a professional manner
