Cemetery Operative

• Pay Rate: £14.47 per hour (PAYE)

• Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (2 months)

Manchester City Council are looking for a dedicated Cemetery Operative to join our team at Southern Cemetery. This temporary position offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to the maintenance and operation of one of the city's key bereavement facilities, ensuring a respectful and well-maintained environment for visitors and the bereaved.

Day-to-day of the role:

• Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and horticultural duties across multiple cemetery sites including Blackley Cemetery & Crematorium, Philips Park Cemetery, Gorton Cemetery, Manchester General Cemetery, and Southern Cemetery.
• Operate and maintain a range of mechanical equipment and tools, ensuring safe usage and adherence to all health and safety regulations.
• Conduct daily checks on vehicles and mechanical equipment, report any defects, and maintain cleanliness.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, funeral directors, and bereaved families to deliver a customer-focused service.
• Respond efficiently and courteously to service requests and queries, applying sensitivity and professionalism in all interactions.
• Support the delivery of around 3,000 burial and cremation services annually, ensuring compliance with council policies and procedures.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, or a similar role.
• Ability to operate mechanical equipment and tools safely.
• Strong communication skills, capable of handling sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
• Must hold a clean driving license as the role requires driving fleet vehicles and operating machinery.
• Team player with the ability to work independently and proactively.
• Commitment to ongoing training and compliance with health and safety regulations.
• This role is physically demanding and primarily outdoor-based, suitable for someone who enjoys working in various weather conditions and is physically fit.
