School Caretaker

Location: Gloucester 
Pay: From £17.00 per hour
Contract: Temporary from September to Christmas 2026. 
Hours: Split shifts (early morning and afternoon/evening)
Work location: In person

Reed Education are working in partnership with a school to recruit a dedicated and reliable School Caretaker. This role is essential in ensuring the school site is safe, secure, clean, and fully operational for pupils, staff, and visitors.

The Role:

The School Caretaker will be responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the school premises, including opening and closing the site and supporting operational needs across the school.

Key duties include:

• Opening the school each morning and securing the site at the end of the day
• Carrying out security checks during opening and closing procedures
• Completing minor repairs and general maintenance (e.g. painting, basic plumbing, fixing furniture)
• Reporting and monitoring more significant maintenance issues
• Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations
• Conducting regular site inspections and risk checks
• Maintaining safe access routes, particularly during poor weather
• Receiving and distributing deliveries around the school
• Assisting with moving furniture and equipment
• Supporting cleanliness of indoor and outdoor areas
• Assisting with waste management and recycling
• Setting up rooms for events, assemblies, and examinations
• Acting as a key holder and responding to emergency call-outs when required

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential:

• Previous caretaking, maintenance, or site experience
• Practical DIY and repair skills
• Ability to work split shifts (early mornings and afternoons/evenings)
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
• Good understanding of health and safety procedures

Desirable:

• Experience working in a school environment
• Knowledge of site security systems (alarms, key holding)
• Manual handling experience

Additional Information:

• Flexibility is required due to split shift working patterns
• An enhanced DBS check is required for this role
